LASIK

Relying on glasses and contacts to correct your vision can be extremely tiresome.

LASIK eye surgery can provide drastic vision correction that totally eliminates your need for corrective lenses.

For decades, patients throughout the state have come to our Huntsville, AL, center to receive LASIK surgery from industry leaders.

We Have Completed Thousands Of LASIK Eye Surgeries

/

LASIK was first approved by the FDA in 1999. Our team includes a surgeon who has been performing LASIK surgery since that time. Collectively, our experts have completed over 10,000 LASIK procedures.

Just What Is LASIK,

And Why Is It Necessary?

Each eye has a cornea, a clear outer layer at the front, that focuses light to create images on the retina. The bending and focusing of light through the cornea is known as refraction. Oftentimes, refraction is not ideal due to issues with the shape of the cornea or eye. Refractive errors lead to myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, which respectively cause nearsightedness, farsightedness, and overall blurred vision.

During LASIK surgery,  corneal tissue is removed and the cornea is reshaped through the use of a special laser. This allows patients to obtain near-perfect vision without the need for any glasses or contacts.

LASIK Has a Great Success Rate

LASIK technology can dramatically correct major refractive errors. A study published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery showcased the laser eye surgery's stellar results:

  • A full 99% of LASIK patients achieve vision that is better than 20/40.
  • Over 90% achieve vision that is 20/20 or better.
  • 96% of patients are satisfied with their laser eye treatment results – the highest satisfaction rate of any elective procedure.

We Offer a Versatile Laser Surgery Alternative

The EVO ICL implantable contact lens is a collamer lens that is surgically implanted and works in conjunction with your eye’s natural functions to produce clearer, sharper vision. A versatile alternative to laser correction surgery, EVO ICL is ideal for a wide range of patients who seek vision correction.

An FDA study found that this may even be a better option than LASIK for patients with very high degrees of nearsightedness.

LASIK Surgery: What to Expect

Our surgeons offer various LASIK surgeries. Since the degree of customization at our Huntsville practice is so high, we cannot provide a uniform timeline for each patient. That being said, here is what you can expect if you were to receive a traditional LASIK procedure:
LASIK is typically completed in under 30 minutes.
LASIK is typically completed in under 30 minutes.

Preparing the Eye

Dr. Mitchell sterilizes the surface of your eye and places eye drops that completely numb the treated area.

Precise Reshaping

Next, Dr. Mitchell creates a thin flap on your corneal surface. He will then fold the flap back to access your underlying corneal tissue. The final step is laser reshaping of your corneal tissue to correct refractive errors.

Replacing the Flap

Once the tissue is reshaped, Dr. Mitchell puts the corneal flap back in place where it begins healing on its own. You can likely return to work within three days.

Am I a Good Candidate for
Laser Eye Surgery?

Our doctors are not afraid to turn individuals away if they are not ideal candidates for LASIK. While this may seem unreasonable, the truth is that such a determination is in the patient's best interest. We would rather protect their health than charge them for a procedure that is not right for them.

A common reason that someone may not be a good candidate for LASIK is refractive instability – changes in contact lenses or glasses prescriptions in the past year. This instability can commonly occur for people who are:

In Their Early 20s Or Younger

Experiencing Fluctuating
Hormones Due to Diabetes

Currently Breastfeeding or Pregnant

Taking Medications That Cause
Vision Fluctuation

Additionally, certain diseases or medications can inhibit proper healing. Our refractive surgery experts will evaluate all these areas and more before safely proceeding with life-changing vision correction surgery.

LASIK & Dry Eyes

While LASIK can be truly life-changing, it does have a common drawback. Our refractive surgery experts make sure that each of our Huntsville, AL, patients knows that dry eye is a common side effect for patients who undergo LASIK. In fact, roughly 95% of people experience some form of dry eye symptoms after LASIK eye surgery.

This statistic may be discouraging to some. However, it is important to note that the majority of individuals who report dry eye symptoms after the procedure also had some symptoms prior to surgery. Additionally, our eye experts can recommend various ways to treat dry eyes. These include special eye drops, avoiding dry climates, changing blinking habits, and taking certain types of supplements or vitamins. With some simple steps, we're able to help many people qualify for treatment.
